Program details
The Recreation Therapist Assistant Certificate (RTAC) will prepare the graduate to work as an Assistant to Recreation Therapists and as Recreation Therapy Workers. It is a ten-month certificate of full-time study including two semesters of coursework plus 8 weeks of practical experience in clinical settings.
Recreation Therapist Assistants help to plan, coordinate, and deliver recreation-based treatment programs for people of all ages, with a variety of disabilities, injuries, or conditions, in many healthcare and community settings.
Principles, theory, and practice will be taught at the Assistant level in the discipline of Recreation Therapy. Students will obtain an academic and practical foundation in the areas of health and recreation.
Students will graduate with a Recreation Therapist Assistant Certificate (RTAC) which will enable them to work at an entry-level as an assistant in the area of recreation therapy and as a recreation and/or activity therapy worker.
Education Pathways:
Students in, and graduates of, the Recreation Therapist Assistant Certificate (RTAC) program may apply to the Therapist Assistant Diploma (TAD) program and complete remaining courses to satisfy the diploma graduation requirements to become a Physiotherapist Assistant and Occupational Therapist Assistant. To apply to the Therapist Assistant Diploma, the RTAC student must fulfill all of the admission requirements for the Therapist Assistant diploma.
A Recreation Therapist Assistant Certificate student who is considering applying to TAD, may take the additional Adult Upgrading Classes (e.g. BIOL 12, CHEM 11) to satisfy the admission requirements along with the RTAC program (depending on course availability due to class scheduling).
For students interested in starting with part-time college programming after completing the RTAC program as a pathway to the Therapist Assistant diploma: students may wish to complete the required university transfer courses in English, Biology and Psychology to apply into TAD through that admission option. To take the university transfer courses, the student must meet the prerequisites for each course and would apply to the college through Arts.
